During my recent romantic escape to the Gladstone Hotel in Fairlie, I found a charming blend of old-world character and warm hospitality awaiting us. Although the building has certainly seen better days, the cleanliness and coziness of our spacious room truly made up for it, offering us a perfect retreat after our adventures exploring the breathtaking New Zealand landscape. We particularly enjoyed the complimentary breakfast, which was abundant and hit the spot for both my partner and me—who doesn’t appreciate a solid start to a day full of cycling, kayaking, and soaking in the vivid turquoise lakes? One evening, we decided to dine at the on-site restaurant, where we indulged in a delightful seafood platter that was incredibly satisfying without breaking the bank. It’s amazing how a good meal can enhance the travel experience! The real highlight, however, was seemingly endless nights beneath the stars at the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve—a truly magical experience! And let’s not forget about Karen, the lovely staff member who made us feel right at home, embodying the true spirit of hospitality here.
